The Ellerslie United Methodist Church was founded in July of 1910, following a tent revival conducted by Reverend McCord, president of a small Methodist college in Mississippi. Adger S. Ellison donated the land. The Reverend R.W. Cannon was the pastor who sponsored the building of the church. At this time he was assigned to the Midland Charge and also served Clowers Church near Cataula.
Records show that charter members included A.S. Ellison, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Ellison, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ellison, Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Ellison, Miss Frances Ellison, Mrs. Janetta Ginn, Mr. Steve Batchelor, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Tidwell, Miss Margaret Ellison, Mr. Charles Tidwell, and Miss Effie Ginn. All of these were transferred by certificate from Clowers church. Mr. and Mrs. W.I.H. Pitts and Miss Margaret Pitts were transferred from Waverly Hall.
The church was first remodeled under the leadership of Dr. Loy Veal in 1952. During the pastorate of the Reverend John Bagwell, in 1961, new Sunday school rooms, a porch, and steps were added. In 1972 central heat and air-conditioning were added. During 1979-1980 the interior was remodeled. In 1987 new pew cushions were bought, the church underpinned, siding installed, and the entire church was rewired. Since that time up until present, the Fellowship Hall has been added, the church parking lot paved, new doors and exterior lights have been added to the Sanctuary, as well as, new chandeliers. In 2004, the sanctuary was repainted and a P.A. sound system was installed. In 2005, the Ellerslie United Methodist Memorial Garden was added along with new playground equipment. We have many plans for the future and are excited to be in a growing community.
